Legend has it that Aristotle advised Alexander the Great to conquer the island of Socotra to acquire its famed aloe supply for treating his wounded soldiers.

Veterinary surgeon David Urch, in his excellent book ALOE VERA: Nature’s Gift, tells us that to date 75 nutrients have been identified in stabilised Aloe Vera gel, the most important being:
Lignin (probably the substance assisting aloe vera preparations to penetrate to the skin’s dermal layers);
Saponins (natural soapy cleansers with antiseptic properties excellent for cleaning the skin);
Anthraquinones (the 12 so far identified are: Aloin, Anthracene, Aloetic Acid, Aloe Emodin, Anthranol, Barbaloin, Chrysophanic Acid, Cinnamonic Acid, Emodin, Ethereal Oil, Isobarbaloin and Resistannol.
There are also at least nine minerals present in aloe vera. These are:
Calcium, Sodium, Iron, Potassium, Chromium, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese and Copper.
David Urch also tells us that Aloe Vera contains a number of natural vitamins, particularly Vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, Folic Acid, Choline and Niacin.
You’ll gather from the above that aloe vera is as good for animals as it is for humans. I’ve even heard it said, tongue-in-cheek at Forever, that far from testing products on animals we test them on humans instead!
Obviously, the quality of the aloe vera used in products is key if you want to benefit from the plant’s nutritional properties.
